February has vanished!

February has certainly flown by! Amici had a seizure on the 7th of February at 9:07PM and then about 5-10 minutes later he had another while outside (he had just gone to the bathroom and I was out there with him). Thankfully the snow where he had fallen wasn't deep and it had been packed down from his traffic and our traffic. He was safe. There was a possibility that he had 3 seizures that day. When I got home from work his kennel was a mess (he is upstairs in our bedroom) and it appeared that he had foam residue on his lower jaw. He does like to play in his water dish though so we aren't positive. Thankfully, he made it through that seizures okay (cluster at night) and the potential one during the day that was unwitnessed.

On February 18, 2008 Amici had another seizure. That gives Amici only 11 days in between. We've been keeping a good log and Alan has a spreadsheet of all of Amici's seizures. This is the shortest interval we've had. This one started at 8:30PM. The seizure itself only lasted a minute or two but then 10-15 minutes later he would have another one. This is the first time that we have witnessed him having a cluster seizure of 3. Also, in this episode and on the 7th episode, Amici howled towards the end of his seizures. On the 7th I was able to keep myself fairly composed but on the 18th I sat on the floor next to him and the tears just kept falling. I wasn't sobbing (I do try and remain quiet, Amici is going through enough without wondering what the heck is going on around him) but the crocodile tears kept coming. Seizures aren't a site that people want to watch, but listening to your pup howl like he is in pain....ugh...that just hurts. Amici did come out of the seizure okay.

We've been in the vets loop for quite a bit now. He is very familiar with us when we call. We have been asking about the potassium bromide for a few months now but our vet was hesitate. He wanted to increase the phenobarbital first. He did increase it and the seizures seem to have become worse (more frequent, more clusters). We had Amici's blood levels checked and at this time he is at a safe range for the phenobarbital. Thursday night (2/21/08) we started the potassium bromide. Now Amici is on: Phenobarbital 120 MG 2x day and he's on 2mL of the Potassium bromide 2x a day. We got the chicken flavoring. We've been mixing it with non fat plain yogurt or with non fat plain cottage cheese. He seems to like it as he licks it all up. Then we give him the pheno with a spoonful of pumpkin. So far his bowel movements have looked fine. I know it has been too early to tell but Alan and I feel like Amici is acting more like his usual self. We haven't seen any side effects yet (and there is a bunch) but we'll be on the look out.

Although this may seem like a sad post, really it is an improvement post. :) We have a new med, Amici seems to take it nicely, and he seems more like himself in just this short time. We're not expecting a miracle. We'd just like him to have longer times in between seizures.

Here's life at the dog park with Amici (from last weekend). We did go to the dog park shown below today too but we didn't bring our camera. Enjoy the shots, meet one of Amici's favorite playmates- Milo, and relish in some of Amici's close ups. :)

We've been wondering how Amici has been. We are sad to hear about the seizures but glad to hear his VET has finally let you try an additional medicine. Callie (MaPaw foste sibe) has hadgood results with a combo of those 2 meds. We will keep our paws crossed for you!

That dog park full of snow looks like great fun! I think I would really like Maine during the winter.

BTW, my dad will be in Portland again this week. Yell out a big woo for him!

Hi! you don't know me, but lacy lulu sent us pups your way, so that we could all send you our loves.

sister works at a vet, and has seen lots of dogs go on phenobarb, and potassium bromide... (btw, was your hands after you touch the potassium, its really bad for people) and, dogs do just fine and live all long and happy!

I'm sure once you find the right dosing, you'll be just fine!

Love to you,

Thanks for the detailed post: I know I've never met Amici in person, but I feel like I know him (and thus worry about him a great deal). It sounds like your vet is really diligent, which is great. And more importantly, you two sound like the most attentive humans Amici could ask for.

Good luck with the weather this week: it's going to be a snowy one!

All our best,
Kathryn and Ari

Hi Amici,
I am glad to meet you but what an awful thing to have seizures. Lacy told me to come by to visit you. I will cross my paws and say a prayer for you.
P.S. I hope you like cats?

I just read about Amici on Lacy Lulu's blog, and wanted to stop by and give you my support. It must be a very anxious time for you, and I hope the new medication helps him be himself more. It's so upsetting when our pets are ill.

Poor Amici! I sure hope the Potassiunm Bromide helps. Did they put him on a loading dose, or just start with his normal daily dose? Sometimes a loading dose is needed for several days to get it loaded into the body, before it is reduced down to the regular daily dose. We have had wonderful results with it for Abby. My friend Cody uses it for her Sibe too, and it has significantly reduced his seizures to only a few a year.

Something extra you can do to help with any side affects is use Dyna-Lode tablets and Dyna-Taurine. They help with the possible liver side affects. My vet suggested we use them for Abby. You can find them at I would highly suggest you add them to his daily routine. Abby is now 13, and has been on the Potassium Bromide since she was 3 and still has perfect liver function. And since Amici is on both the KBr and Pheno, he really needs that extra support for his system.

If you have any questions, please drop me an e-mail (on my blog).

Hey Amici,
We're sorry you keep getting those nasty seizures, but hopefully the new meds will get things under control for you. Sometimes it just takes awhile for the meds to settle your system. We know it's hard for your Mama to watch you, but know that she is right there beside you to care for you. Sending lots of healing hugs.

This is so heartbreaking and frustrating. Mom once had a dog who had seizures and it's such a tough thing to see. Our thoughts and prayers are with adorable Amici who has such a huge personality and and even larger will to get better.....and great parents.

Those seizures are so scary! Rocky hasn't had one since Feb 13 (knock on wood)---he had over 30 on that day. He is taking 2 cc of Potassium Bromide and 1/2 valium pill 2 x a day. He hates the Potassium Bromide. You said you flavored yours with chicken? Did the vet flavor it up for you?
So far Rocky's doing o.k. He was not quite himself for a week or so there (I guess the shock to his brain had made him temporarily forget things) but he's pretty much back to his old self. We will keep our fingers and paws crossed that Amici continues to do well!
